Window Treatments

Can you remember back to a time when most windows looked alike? I'm talking about how they were all covered in draperies if they were in living rooms and bedrooms and in cafe curtains if they were in kitchens. Our house was that way, and I could go to friends' homes and find the same thing. These window coverings were backdrops against the scenery displayed in the room. We've come a long way since then, though, and people seek much more individuality than they used to. The heavy draperies are being replaced by many different types of window treatments.

Heavy draperies once were the vogue. Today, however, many homeowners are opting for lighter, brighter treatments, especially those that don't require yards and yards of expensive drapery fabrics. For example, if you aren't looking for complete privacy in that room, you might be able to get by on some windows with a padded cornice, valances, or swags above the windows to give the windows a little color.

If you've ever watched the interior designers on TV, you've seen how they wrap a piece of fabric artfully around a curtain rod and call it a window treatment. You can get even simpler and less expensive than that if you make your own rods for your curtains to hang on. For example, you might use an old pool cue, a painted tree branch, or a heavy, decorated wrapping paper tube which will give you a one of a kind look as well as save you the cost of commercial rods.

Choosing the colors for your window treatments can also make them truly unique. You'll want to go with colors that are currently popular, because you don't want your look to be outdated as soon as you've hung the window treatments on the wall. Right now, terra cotta is a very popular color. Pair it with greens, blacks, and golds, and your room will look very up to date. If your furniture won't match with those colors, you can try other basics and accent colors that will coordinate. The day of the chinzy flowery drape is long gone, unless it's in a little girl's bedroom. Otherwise, you want your color choices to be adult, modern, and elegant.

What you put into devising unique window treatments can help to make your household décor both attractive and unique. Use of style, color, and unusual accent pieces can give you a lot of ideas you can work from.
